When Did I Realize I Was 'White'?

In this session we will be discussing Stages of Racial Identity Development & Racial Consciousness originally developed by Janet Helms in 1990/1995. Racial Identity Development is said to be a key factor to relationship building and equality. This development theory helps us to understand the range of views, concepts and emotions that people experience over time about their racial identity. No matter what race you identify the most with, all are important to understand when trying to develop racial equality and tolerance. Understanding this and reading more about each stage helps us gain insight and leads us to being able to understand and discuss racial topics and issues more appropriately and with dignity.

Please read the PDFs located in the upper right hand corner of the page in preparation for our meeting.

Awakening to Change is designed to help unify our community by developing a shared understanding of the history, policy, and experiences shaping contemporary discussions of race. We tackle a new topic each month, sometimes reading books, discussing films, or learning from articles. All are welcome to join!
